Should small businesses think about branding?

I’m often approached by new start-ups to help design a new logo and provide supporting materials and I think this is a really exciting part of starting a new business. But do small businesses really need a brand? I know most small business owners are far too busy actually running their business and generating revenue to give too much thought to their companies brand but I like to think of it like this: Having lots of existing customer’s recommending you and telling everyone how great your business is, is one of the best ways to gain new business but what about if your brand could convey your companies values, build trust and give confidence in the service or products you supply, how great would that be, not having to rely on word of mouth? Branding done well can do this for you. It can communicate your businesses personality, strengths and individuality. Branding is more than just a logo, its a way of expressing your businesses true values and connecting with your customer base. So what are the important points to consider when looking at branding for your businesses?

Think about your business, what it does, where it is now and where you want it to go
Be relevant both about your business and to the clients you have and those you are trying to attract
Be consistent in your message but don’t repeat yourself
Don’t try to copy, build a brand that is innovative and unique to your business
Think about your brand as your businesses personality, how do you want to be known?

Branding your business is your chance to show your core values with a creative twist. Be bold, shout about who you are!
